Substitution rate in a population versus mutation rate in an individual. The ratio of these rates, ua→b/μa→b, depends on the product N ΔF ab of effective population size and fitness difference between the genotypes (in the relevant regime N ≫ 1, ΔF ab ≪ 1, N ΔF ab finite). The substitution rate ua→bis equal to μ ab for neutral mutations (ΔF ab = 0), reduced for deleterious mutations (ΔF ab < 0), and enhanced for advantageous mutations (ΔF ab > 0).
